Part of the Lego® Games stock line, Lava Dragon comes with 1 buildable Lego® die, 1 rule booklet, 1 construction schooling booklet and 4 Lego® microfigures. The rules can turn while the game, a surprising twist that keeps players concerned and engaged. The Lego® die introduces a random element that shapes game as play goes on. Essentially this is a strategy game based on throwing dice. Players face an further challenge that requires them to build the game board from Lego® components before play begins. Each player throws the die to decide whether his knight can move or a special operation is required. Such actions include exciting lava tiles or climbing ropes on the side of the volcano. Strategy comes in when players use these special actions to block the progress of other players. When the winning player reaches the top of the volcano, he or she stands their knight on the lava dragon and takes flight victoriously.

Before starting the first game, players must build the volcano from the Lego® pieces supplied with it. Once the volcano is complete, play begins. The instructions and rules are quite simple. Basically, each player adds colored tiles to the side of the Lego® die as play progresses. This element of randomness ensures that no two games will ever be the same.
